Sunbirds earn weekend split at Lancer Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresno Pacific scored three goals in overtime to earn a 12-11 win over Chapman for a day and weekend split at the Lancer Invitational Saturday. In the first game of the day at the Lancer Aquatics Center, FPU fell to Concordia 12-8.

The Sunbirds (4-3) couldn't overcome a slow start in the opener against the Eagles and fell behind 5-0 after the first period. David Maes and John Samson tallied a goal each in the second quarter, but FPU trailed 8-2 at the break.

After the Eagles opened the third period with two consecutive goals, the Sunbirds used a 4-0 run to pull within striking distance. The run was started with a score from Samson and capped off by Connor Cookingham finding the back of the cage to make the score 10-6.

Concordia responded, however, with a pair of goals and held the FPU offense to two scores in the final period to secure the 12-8 win.

Samson led the charge offensively with a hat-trick, while Maes tallied a pair of goals. Cookingham, Kyle Mauriello and Ian Roos rounded out the scoring with a tally each. Kevin Richey recorded 10 saves in the cage for FPU.

In the nightcap, FPU overcame a three-goal deficit in the second half to force overtime and defeat Chapman. The Sunbirds avenged an earlier season loss to Panthers with the win.

Trailing 7-4 with 7:00 minutes remaining in the third period, the Sunbirds scored three times to pull within one before the quarter ended. Maes, Greg Bracamonte and Roos each found the back of the cage for the Sunbirds in the third.

The Panthers answered the Sunbirds to begin the final quarter with a goal to extend the lead to 9-7. Consecutive goals from Daniel Seymour and Maes, the latter coming with two minutes remaining, forced overtime.

FPU began the first overtime period with a goal from Seymour to take its first lead of the game 10-9. Seymour wasn't finished and tallied another score in the final overtime quarter to extend the Sunbird lead to 11-9, before Maes found the back of the cage to score the would-be game winner with :55 seconds remaining to make the final 12-11.

Seymour amassed four goals in the win, while Roos and Maes each recorded a hat-trick. Bracamonte tallied the final two goals for FPU. Richey recorded eight blocks in the cage for the Sunbirds.

FPU will play its first-ever Western Water Polo Association game on Friday, Sept. 26 at UC San Diego at 6 p.m.
