FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific scored early and often to down Merced College, 18-10, Tuesday night at Sunnyside Aquatics Center.
Daniel Seymour poured in six goals to power the Sunbirds to the win.
FPU improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory.
"Overall I thought we played really well," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We came out really strong before getting a little complacent in the second and third quarters. I was happy with the performance, but we do need to make sure we play consistent in all four quarters."
The Sunbirds opened the game on an 8-1 run, a stretch that had them leading 7-1 after the first period.
Ian Roos started the run with a goal to open play before
Jamison Shapland made the score 8-1 as the second period started.
Matt Boogaard and Seymour tallied a goal each before the half ended to make the score 10-4 at the intermission.
FPU finished off the victory behind the trio of
Connor Cookingham, Seymour and Roos, who tallied five of the Sunbirds' six second-half goals to make the final 18-10.
"I've been really impressed with this group and I think this is the best I've seen them play in terms of looking for each other as options, especially the specific setups we've been working on," said Suhovy. "We played really well as a team tonight and the cohesion is coming together."
Seymour led the Sunbirds with six goals, three in each half, while Roos amassed four scores. Cookingham tallied two scores, Shapland found the back of the cage twice and
Greg Bracamonte,
Kyle Mauriello, Boogaard and
Erik Brown all poured in a goal apiece in the win.
Kevin Richey started and had two saves in the first half, while
Dillon Robinson blocked 10 shots in the final two periods in goal.
"I still feel we have some developing to do, but I think we are in a good place to do well this weekend," said Suhovy. "These guys possess all the ability to go out and get the wins we want."
The Sunbirds travel to the Lancer Invitational this weekend, Sept. 19-20. FPU faces Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, La Verne, Concordia and Chapman in Riverside.
