SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Fresno Pacific concluded play the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament Sunday with a pair of losses against another pair of D1 opponents. FPU fell to #14 Brown 12-7 in the opener before suffering a late heartbreak defeat to Bucknell, who is receiving votes in the national poll, 9-8.
FPU falls to 10-10 overall on the season.
The Sunbirds played well in the morning game, but a sluggish third period proved to be the difference in the loss to Brown. FPU trailed 4-3 at the half before Brown tallied four goals in the third to distance themselves.
Daniel Seymour opened the final period with a pair of goals and
David Maes found the back of the cage once, but it wasn't enough as the Sunbirds fell 12-7.
Seymour and Maes recorded a hat-trick apiece for the Sunbirds, while
Miles Shepard recorded the final goal.
Dillon Robinson tallied six saves in the cage.
In the final game of the Rodeo Tournament, a Bucknell goal inside the final minute proved to be the difference in the match.
Ian Roos tied the match to begin the fourth period 7-7 before he found the back of the cage a minute later to give FPU the lead 8-7 with 6:21 remaining. The Bison responded, however, and scored the final two goals of the game to win 9-8.
Roos led FPU with four goals, while Seymour amassed a hat-trick in the loss.
John Samson tallied the final goal. Robinson played well in goal and finished the game with 10 saves.
"I'm proud of how the guys played," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We showed we can hang with some of the top teams in the nation. All-in-all, it was a solid four games. We continue to grow and improve, which puts us in a great place as we head into our last three games of the season."
The Sunbirds jump back into WWPA play next Saturday, Nov. 1 at Air Force.Â
