Hannah Coyle scored the equalizer in the 75th minute as Fresno Pacific earned a 1-1 draw against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday night. The Sunbirds (5-6-2, 5-2-2 PacWest) out-shot the Sharks 23-13 but played from behind for most of regulation after HPU's Lexi Cameau scored in the 25th minute.
After numerous chances, Coyle broke through for the Sunbirds, putting the ball in the back of the net by heading in a corner kick from
Bianka Garcia. FPU created many opportunities down the stretch and into the overtime, with Coyle putting together one of her best performances of the season and
Mariah Montoya and
Amber Rodriguez creating quality chances as well.
HPU had its share of chances to win it as well, including a point-blank shot with the goalie out of the box late in regulation, but defender
Caressa Archie made a tremendous play to keep the ball out of the goal.
"It was an exciting game for the fans and featured some great end-to-end action," said head coach
Erik Farfan. "There were some great plays made by both sides. We felt we had opportunities to win tonight's match, especially as the night wore on. We felt a little unlucky that we weren't able to punch one in but our team showed great character tonight in coming from behind."
The Sunbirds play their final home game of the season on Monday night, hosting BYU Hawaii at 7:30 pm. It will be senior night for FPU's lone senior as the Sunbirds celebrate the career of
Tori Sena.
