FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno Pacific used a well-balanced scoring attack to take down Delta College, 16-5, Saturday in non-conference action. FPU (8-6) received four goals apiece from
Connor Cookingham and
Daniel Seymour to move its winning streak to three games.
Despite getting off to a slow start and leading 3-2 after the first quarter, the Sunbirds found the back of the net four times in the second period to hold a 7-3 lead at the intermission. FPU tallied four-straight goals, one each from
David Maes, Seymour,
John Samson and Cookingham, to distance themselves from the Mustangs.
FPU continued to extend its lead in the second half and outscored Delta College 9-1 in the final two periods to win 16-5.
"We started off slow and soft, but once the guys realized Delta came to play we stepped up our game in the second half and it showed," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "Our defense for the most part was solid the entire game. We pressed well and created some key steals in the first half, but we weren't getting under our legs and finishing our shots. We had a lot of missed opportunities but in the second half we capitalized on the counter attacks and our outside shots started to fall."
To complement the eight combined scores from Cookingham and Seymour, Maes and
Jamison Shapland tallied two goals apiece, while
Kyle Mauriello, Samson,
Erik Brown and
Ian Roos found the back of the net once each.
Kevin Richey started in goal and amassed nine saves. Maes led the charge defensively with six steals, while Roos grabbed five steals for FPU.
"I'm really happy with the growth of the team of where we're at and what we've been doing," said Suhovy. "The guys are riding some momentum right now and are fired up for the upcoming WWPA games. They've been working hard towards our goal of maybe breaking into the national rankings and getting a conference win against a really strong conference."
FPU faces Concordia, who's receiving votes in the national poll, at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
