Sunbirds snap three-game skid with big win over Chaminade

Box Score

It wasn't always pretty, but the Sunbirds bounced back from Saturday's last-second loss and equaled their win total from all of last season with a resounding 75-61 win over Chaminade.

Jazmine Simpson led all scorers with 18 points followed by Jenay Herring's 17 and Charde Stevens' 12. Stevens finished with eight rebounds finishing two shy of her sixth double-double.

"We have to be willing to fly on the floor every single game," said head coach Lindsey Wilson. "We played decent for a stretch and then we kind of let up on them and we can't do that. We have to go pedal to the metal all 40 minutes in order to be able to win games in this conference."

In a game riddled with turnovers the Sunbirds (4-11, 4-5 PacWest) came out on top thanks in large part to holding Chaminade (2-13, 2-7 PacWest) to under 40-percent shooting. In three of Fresno Pacific's four wins this season opponents have shot under 40-percent. The two teams combined for a total of 57 turnovers, the most in any game the Sunbirds have played in thi season.

Offensively the Sunbirds were able to eclipse the 70-point mark for the first time since an 88-82 overtime win over Holy Names on January 8. Fresno Pacific shot 45.6-percent from the field hitting 31 of its 68 attempts, their highest percentage of 2014.

After Chaminade tied the game at seven with 15:45 remaining in the half the Sunbirds hit their stride offensively scoring the next 13 points to take a commanding lead at 20-7. FPU pushed the lead as high as 22 before the Silverswords closed the half out on a 9-5 run.

FPU scored 39 first half points, their second highest total of the season. The Sunbirds scored 46 first-half points in an 86-84 loss at home to Dixie State on December 7.

The Sunbirds continued the onslaught in the second half as the Silverswords never got closer than 12 as FPU forced 14 turnovers in the half. Simpson led Fresno Pacific offensively scoring 12 of her 18 in the second. With the win the Sunbirds have matched their win total (4) from all of last year.

Fresno Pacific will look to make it two straight when they continue their home stand against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
