Fresno, Calif. -- Fresno Pacific was unable to extend its winning streak and sweep the season series against California Baptist as the Lancers pulled out a 76-69 win over the Sunbirds in Fresno.
Jenay Herring led three scorers in double figures with 16.
Sienna Gonzales added a season-high 14 and
Charde Stevens recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
"We had a lot of chances to beat a good CBU team tonight," said head coach
Lindsey Wilson. "We missed too many shots in the paint and didn't execute well enough defensively. We have to be better than we were today to win games."
The Sunbirds got off to a rocky start missing three of their four shots, which allowed Cal Baptist to claim an early 6-2 lead. The Lancers continued to push extending their lead to nine with 2:04 remaining in the half before the Sunbirds, sparked by four straight points from Stevens, crawled back within two heading into halftime.
Out of the break the Herring led a 6-0 run to put the Sunbirds in front by one. The lead changed hands three times before CBU pulled ahead with a three from guard Erin Asher with 12:55 remaining.
Asher and freshman Kamille Diaz punished FPU from behind the three-point line leading a huge 21-12 run for the Lancers. FPU meanwhile struggled to hit its shots in the second half knocking down just 36.7-percent of the team's shots (11-30). The Sunbirds were unable to replicate Wednesday night's furious comeback with 1:32 remaining and overcome CBU's eight points lead in the final moments despite a pair of late three-pointers.Â
Diaz scored a game-high 30 points on the Sunbirds who were unable to clamp down defensively in the second half allowing Cal Baptist to knock down six three pointers.
Fresno Pacific next makes the long trek to St. George, Utah to take on Dixie State at 4:00 p.m.Â
