FPU vs. #13 UC Davis
FPU vs. #18 Redlands
The Sunbirds came close, but were unable to overtake two top-20 teams at the Aggie Shootout hosted by UC Davis.
A 10-1 start for No. 13 UC Davis to start the first match put FPU in an early whole they would be unable to climb out of. A pair of goals by freshman
Kyle Madel and junior
Zlatko Vlasic each scored twice in the 19-7 loss.
In match two, the Sunbirds once again fell behind in the first quarter after No. 18 Redlands held a 5-1 lead at the end of one. FPU fought their way back into the match with a four goal second quarter. Vlasic once again powered the offense with two goals in the second and three in the match.
David Maes also poured in three goals for the match. Redlands reestablished themselves in the third, outscoring the Sunbirds by two. A 3-1 effort in the fourth was not enough for the Sunbirds who fell to 5-6 on the season.
The three-goal loss was the closest loss to a top-20 team since the Sunbirds nearly upended No. 13 Air Force last season in a 17-15 decision.
"We knew today would be tough games against ranked teams," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We allowed them to get up on us in the first quarter and had to play catch up the rest of the way. Overall I was happy with the day and what we learned, but we need to be able to come out in quarter one the way we are able to finish the fourth quarter."
The Sunbirds will be back in action on October 4 in Pomona for the Gary Troyer Tournament.Â
