FPU vs. Occidental
The Sunbirds split a two-match day with a win over Occidental and a hard-fought loss against No. 15 Santa Clara.
FPU held a one-goal lead through two and a half quarters, but were unable to hang on to beat the Broncos as they fell 14-9.
Jake Finney was fantastic in goal for the Sunbirds with 15 saves.
David Maes scored at the buzzer to tie the match at 6-6 heading into the half. Out of the break the Sunbirds struck first on a great shot by junior
Zlatko Vlasic.
The Broncos buckled down on the defensive end and kept FPU out of the goal the rest of the quarter to take a three-goal lead into the fourth.
Justin Lopez-Lamb cut the lead to two with a crafty quick shot from the center of the pool. SCU answered right back with a goal of their own on transition to put the game out of reach.
In their second match of the day the Sunbirds rallied to beat Occidental for the second straight time in a 9-8 decision. The win moves the Sunbirds to 5-4 on the season.Â
"I was happy with how we played today. Finished 1-1 with a hard fought match against a ranked Santa Clara, and holding on to beat Occidental," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "Seymour and Maes scored some big shots for us. We continue to learn how to play consistently and patiently and we are growing every week. This is a young team and I am excited with how well we are adjusting and improving."
