Fresno Pacific vs. Occidental
It took a little longer than anyone would have hoped, but the Sunbirds moved above .500 with a pair of wins on the final day of the Lancer Invitational.
The Sunbirds were stifling on defense against Occidental in their second match, holding the Tigers to just two goals through the first half of play.
Junior
Zlatko Vlasic scored twice in the first quarter to help give the Sunbirds a 3-1 lead after one. The Sunbirds won the second quarter by an identical score to give themselves their largest lead at the half this season. After playing to an even third, Occidental was in a desperate situation, but FPU wouldn't let off as they pushed their advantage out to five at 11-6.
The Sunbirds went on to win by a score of 12-9 to move to 4-3 on the season. Vlasic led the team in scoring with four goals, sophomore
Daniel Seymour chipped in three and sophomore
David Maes added two goals in the win.
"I felt the guys played well this weekend," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We had a few moments when we strayed from the game plan, but we were quick to recover. Our freshmen got a lot of experience and continued to show growth in every game. The guys got a glimpse of what they are capable of and what they need to work on."
FPU beat Chapman 5-0 by virtue of a forfeit earlier in the day.
The Sunbirds will return home next Saturday for a pair of matches against No. 16 Santa Clara and Occidental.Â
