Sunbirds recover from slow start, open PacWest play with 3-1 win at NDNU

Box Score

#12 Fresno Pacific def. Notre Dame de Namur 3-1 (13-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23)

Belmont, Calif. - The Sunbirds recovered from a slow start and used a quality defensive performance to defeat Notre Dame de Namur 3-1 on the road in the PacWest opener Wednesday night. FPU (6-2, 1-0 PacWest) posted a dismal .104 attack percentage on the night and had a season-high 29 attack errors but the defense stepped up behind 20 digs from Hannah Butler and 10 off the bench from Rachel Brown.

Rupia Inck led the offense with 11 kills, but hit a season-low .047 on the night. Jessie Alcorn added 10 kills and Morghan Williams had six kills, three blocks and a team-high .400 attack percentage.

The Argos (2-7, 0-1 PacWest) got a double-double from Kawai Robins-Hardy in the loss.

"Our focus needs to get better and our execution needs to improve," said head coach Kelly Winter. "Notre Dame came out to play and they played good defense but we need to do a lot better than 29 attack errors."

FPU is back on the road this Saturday, facing PacWest rival Azusa Pacific at 3 pm.

"We need to refocus and really work on getting better this week," said Winter. "We have a lot of work to do in the gym to prepare for a tough opponent like APU."
