Sunbird bats stifled by Warriors

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Fresno Pacific was swept in a doubleheader at home for just the second time in the last six years, falling to Cal State Stanislaus 3-2 and 7-4 on Friday. The Sunbirds batted just .148 as a team on the day, dropping to 3-2 on the season.

"We just couldn't get anything going offensively," said head coach Oscar Hirschkorn. "Nine hits in 18 innings isn't going to get it done. I don't think that's going to be typical of our team though. I thought we hit some balls hard, but we just couldn't string together quality at-bats in a row. Tomorrow we've got to regroup and step up to the challenge, and make some adjustments offensively."

Game 1 - Cal State Stanislaus 3, Fresno Pacific 2

The Sunbirds managed just four hits in game one as the Warriors' Bryon Lemon went eight strong innings. J.D. Salles struck out seven over seven innings, giving up just one earned run for FPU, but took the loss.

FPU tied the game 1-1 in the fifth when Zak Taylor singled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout. The Warriors would score twice in the next inning though to retake the lead. Devin Lee singled, stole second and came around to score on a Brett Bishop sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 3-2, but the Sunbirds wouldn't get any closer.

Anthony Cantu made his Sunbird pitching debut out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings.

The highlight of the game came on defense for the Sunbirds, as Bobby Mendoza made a leaping grab on a line drive to third base.

Game 2 - Cal State Stanislaus 7, Fresno Pacific 4

The Warriors completed the sweep behind more quality pitching, this time from starter Dustin Baisdon, who gave up two runs over six innings. Mitchell Scott took the loss for FPU, surrendering eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six.

FPU pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth after a two-out, two-run double by John Koretoff, but the Sunbirds stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Danny Molieri would close it out and earn his second save of the day for CSUS.

Bobby Mendoza and Kyle Coppom each had two hits to lead the Sunbirds. FPU got some quality work out of the bullpen from Bryce Daily, Kellen Hackett and Aaron Kirkpatrick.

The Sunbirds travel to Turlock tomorrow to complete the four-game series with the Warriors.
