Sunbirds fall to #25 Sea Lions, drop third straight

Box Score

Fresno Pacific dominated the first set but #25 Point Loma came from behind to deal the Sunbirds a 3-1 loss on Saturday night (25-15, 20-25, 22-25, 16-25).

The Sunbirds (11-11, 6-9 PacWest) came out of the gate swinging, hitting .346 in set one while holding the Sea Lions (20-6, 13-3 PacWest) to a .103 attack percentage in a 25-15 win.

"They came out ready to go," said head coach Kelly Winter. "They were really playing for each other and you could tell. We played as a team and executed. It's just hard to sustain that good of volleyball against a team as quality as Point Loma."

The next two sets were back-and-forth battles both won out by the Sea Lions before PLNU built a 9-1 lead in set four and didn't look back, sealing their first win in Fresno since 2002. FPU hit just .061 over the last two sets, as team dropped its third straight match and the fifth of its last six.

"Consistency has been our struggle all season," said Winter. "We haven't been able to sustain great play. We made too many mistakes tonight and you can't get away with that against a team like Point Loma."

Rupia Inck posted a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs, as did Jessie Alcorn with 10 kills and 10 digs. Chelsea Speaks narrowly missed having a second straight double-double, finishing with 14 assists and nine digs. Bissie DenHartog dished out a team-high 22 assists, while Hannah Butler turned in a quality defensive performance with 17 digs.

Heather Levitt led the way for the Sea Lions with 19 kills. Alyssa Dwyer added 18 on .452 hitting. Savannah Wedemeyer dished out 45 assists and Christin Fisher had 19 digs.

The Sunbirds now travel to the Bay Area for matches next weekend at Academy of Art and last-place Holy Names.
