Box Score
Fresno Pacific hit .400 as a team, went two sets without recording an error and posted 13 service aces as the Sunbirds breezed past Academy of Art 3-1 on Wednesday night to pick up their fourth straight win in arguably their most complete match of the season (21-25, 25-13, 25-14, 25-21).
"We picked a great night to hit .400 as a team," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "That's a pretty impressive number and we haven't seen that number all season. It just shows how much potential this team has, and I really want them to see and embrace that. We've been up and down all season because we've given the easy points away. Nights like tonight show how good this team can be. We've been really pleased with the last four matches and we've gotten better in each one of them."
After dropping the first set, the Sunbird proceeded to hit .500 in set two and .536 in set three without recording an attack error in either set. FPU finished with 51 kills to just seven total errors and got seven service aces from
Hannah Butler, the second most ever by a Sunbird player in the rally scoring era (Martina Gregusova, 10 vs. Cornerstone, 2009).
Butler's play ignited the Sunbirds in set two as the team went down 2-0 early in the set before going on a 9-0 run with her serving. The Urban Knights had no answer for the devastating serve, as four of Butler's aces came during that 9-0 run. The Sunbirds would go on to take that set 25-13 before cruising in set three in similar fashion and holding off the Knights in set four.
"The key was to get them out of system," said Winter. "Academy of Art has a great offense. They've got a great setter that can dish it out all over and so it's critical to serve tough. Hannah was unstoppable. She was a lot of fun to watch."
Rupia Inck had 15 kills (.419) and
Rebecca Waller added 13 without making an error for a sizzling .650 attack percentage. Butler finished with 24 digs and
Bissie DenHartog had 45 assists.
Jessie Alcorn added 10 kills, seven digs and four aces in the win.
Morghan Williams led the team with four blocks.
Melissa Brum had 17 kills to lead the Urban Knights (11-16, 7-12 PacWest). Rachael Smith added 43 assists and 10 digs.
The Sunbirds (15-11, 10-9 PacWest) take on Cal Baptist in the season finale on Saturday at 3 pm. It will be senior day for
Jessie Alcorn and
Callie Kloubec.
