Hilo, Hawaii - Fresno Pacific is eager to get back to the mainland after going 1-3 during a four-match Hawaii road trip following Monday night's 3-1 loss to Hawaii Hilo.
The Sunbirds (11-9, 6-7 PacWest) won the first set 25-15, but ran out of gas in the next three 21-25, 16-25 and 20-25 as the Vulcans (8-11, 3-11 PacWest) picked up their most notable victory of the season.
Rupia Inck posted a double-double for the third straight match, finishing with 22 kills and 14 digs, and
Hannah Butler turned in another strong defensive performance with a match-high 30 digs, but the Sunbirds hit just .157 as a team and made 23 attack errors in the loss.
"We just couldn't finish," said head coach
Kelly Winter. "We struggled throughout the night to consistently put balls away. Credit to Hawaii Hilo, they played a great defensive match and were aggressive all night. In the end we were a little too inconsistent and they wanted it more."
No other Sunbird outside of Inck or Butler finished in double figure kills or digs.
Bissie DenHartog dished out 35 assists and
Chelsea Speaks added nine.
Rebecca Waller led the team with eight blocks.
The Vulcans meanwhile had a featured an aggressive attack with three players finishing with 15 or more kills: Callie Aberle, Marley Strand-Nicolaisen and Kyndra Trevino-Scott.
FPU will look to get back on track this week against two conference rivals, hosting Azusa Pacific on Friday and #25 Point Loma on Saturday.
