Sunbirds tripped up at Chaminade

Box Score Box Score

#23-ranked Fresno Pacific suffered an unexpected five-set loss at Chaminade in Honolulu on Friday night as the Sunbirds crumbled in sets four and five after leading the match 2-1.

FPU outlasted the Silverswords in set one 27-25 before dropping set two 25-21. The Sunbirds came back with a decisive 25-15 win in set three however and appeared to have the match in hand before a 25-17 CUH win in set four forced a final set. In the closing set, the Sunbirds would claw their way back from a 9-5 deficit to take the lead 12-11, only to surrender four of the last five points to fall 15-13.

The Sunbirds (10-8, 5-6 PacWest) made 27 attack errors as well as a season-high 11 service errors, which allowed the Silverswords (7-12, 4-10 PacWest) to claim the victory despite hitting just .126 as a team.

Rupia Inck led FPU with 20 kills and Jessie Alcorn added 15, but FPU failed to hit consistently outside of a set three that saw the team hit .406 with no errors. Hannah Butler led the defense with 25 digs. Bissie DenHartog and Inck also had double-digit digs as each recorded a double-double. DenHartog had 40 assists on the night.

FPU did have one of its better blocking nights of the season, led by Morghan Williams with five.

Reigna Johnson and Kapiolani Rapoza led the Silverswords with 11 kills apiece, while Brenda Walker finished with 28 digs.

FPU faces Hawaii Pacific tomorrow at 6 pm local time, 9 pm Pacific. The Sunbirds defeated HPU 3-1 in Fresno earlier this season.
