A third quarter comeback was not enough for the Sunbirds to overtake #18 California Baptist as FPU celebrated its senior night in a 16-11 loss.
"We just came out too tense and too nervous in the biggest home match of the season on senior night," said head coach
Bryan Suhovy. "We didn't settle in and it killed us."
Freshman
Steven Kaufmann netted three goals for the Sunbirds to lead FPU.
Daniel Seymour,
David Maes,
John Samson and senior
Stephen Chafi each scored twice. Both of Seymour's goals came in a crucial third quarter comeback for the Sunbirds.
California Baptist came out of the gate fast scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter to take a stranglehold on the match after the first quarter.
The Sunbirds ended their scoring drought in the second in a back in forth quarter that FPU eventually won 5-4. With CBU up three at the half, Fresno Pacific was in need of a big quarter.
The third was that big quarter. FPU ended the third tallying five goals and limiting the Lancers' to just two. Kaufmann scored twice in the frame, one of four underclassmen to score for the Sunbirds on the night.
"The comeback was extremely impressive. We just had them take a deep breath and get back to the game plan. Our freshman really stepped up," said Suhovy. "We've got a lot of young guys that we are counting on to play like they are juniors and seniors. We showed a lot of potential and growth tonight."
The Lancers' took control in the fourth quarter with five unanswered goals to start the period. A sixth and final goal iced the game with 2:17 remaining as CBU sealed its 20th straight win over FPU. The 11 goals scored by the Sunbirds tied a program high for goals scored against Cal Baptist.
Jake Finney had a strong night with double-digit saves in the final home match of his career.
The Sunbirds will head south for four games in two days in the Santa Clara Rodeo Tournament this weekend.
