Sunbirds battle tough competition in opening day of tournament

The Sunbirds battled against top-level competition in their first day at the Gary Troyer Tournament but were unable to come away with a win.

Fresno Pacific fell in their opening match in a tough 12-7 loss in a rematch against Chapman. Daniel Seymour led the way for FPU in scoring with two goals along with Glenn Lyon.

The Sunbirds were even with the Cougars at the end of the first quarter, but a big second quarter push gave Chapman a three goal lead at the break. A lead they would not give up.

The Cougars used a big fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Sunbirds who failed to capitalize on many chances they had.

“Today didn't play out like we hoped it would,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “Against Chapman we came out and played hard but just couldn't finish the opportunities we created. We executed the game plan just like we practiced and had some great scoring opportunities but couldn't finish.”

In the second game Fresno Pacific was up against a powerhouse in #10 Long Beach State. The 49ers were able to dominate the game scoring a 23-4 victory.

Lyon had the majority of the offense with three goals for Fresno Pacific who failed to score at least five goals for the first time this season.  Ian Roos scored the other goal for FPU.

“We knew they were a strong team,” said Suhovy. “It was a good experience to play a team of that caliber. We walked away learning a lot and are now getting ready for tomorrow.”

The Sunbirds lost two straight games for the first time this season and fell to 9-5 on the season. The men will be back in action tomorrow at the Gary Troyer Tournament with games against Cal Tech and Fordham.
