Fresno Pacific nearly toppled rival #21 California Baptist in Colorado Springs at the Air Force Tournament on Saturday before falling to the Lancers 14-11.
The Sunbirds lost earlier in the day to #13 Air Force 16-7 after FPU lost by just two a week ago in Santa Clara.
Glenn Lyon led the way once again for Fresno Pacific with three goals followed by Daniel Seymour with two. Brian Xicotencatl and Dan Wilson each added one for the Sunbirds who were unable to stop the Falcons in the high altitude.
Jake Finney recorded 12 stops in goal including five in the first quarter for Fresno Pacific.
Against California Baptist the Sunbirds were in it until the end. Down by just one at the break the Sunbirds came storming back in the early part of the third quarter before the Lancers took an 11-8 lead at the end of three.
"We came out strong against CBU and took the lead early in the game," said head coach Bryan Suhovy. "A couple of small mistakes allowed them to regain the lead, and we missed opportunities we should have made. If we fix those things it is a different result."
FPU was unable to close the gap in the fourth as both teams scored three goals.
Wilson scored three to lead FPU while Seymour, Vlasic and Glenn Lyon chipped in two goals apiece and Sascha Ludwig and Justin Lopez-Lamb added once goal each.
"All in all we continue to improve, closing the gap on these top 25 teams," said Suhovy. "We play Air Force once more tomorrow and it should be a great game."
FPU takes on #13 Air Force again tomorrow before heading back in California for their National Tournament Invite next weekend.
