Sunbirds unable to take down rival #21 California Baptist

Fresno Pacific was unable to take down #21 California Baptist as the Lancers used a big second half to pull away from the Sunbirds 21-11.

“I was very proud of how our team played tonight,” said head coach Bryan Suhovy. “Each player stepped up and contributed in a very strong way.”

Five goals by Scott Gleason, two of which came in a six goal third quarter, powered CBU to their 12th win of the season and their 15th straight win over FPU who remain winless against the Lancers.

Gleason was matched by five goals from Zlatko Vlasic for Fresno Pacific. Vlasic scored two of the team's three goals in the third quarter to keep FPU in the match heading into the fourth. Vlasic was followed by Glenn Lyon who scored three goals and Dan Wilson who scored two in his first game back from shoulder surgery.

“Glenn was a force to reckon with the entire game,” said Suhovy. “He came out with a fire in his belly that CBU couldn't put out.”

Goalkeeper Jake Finney stopped 10 CBU shots on the night, his second highest save total of the season.

The Sunbirds kept the match close going into halftime down just two goals to the Lancers at 9-7. Fresno Pacific scored the first goal out of the break and traded goals with Cal Baptist at 11-9. CBU then scored four straight to begin to pull away from FPU.

In the fourth the Lancers were at it again scoring five consecutive goals in the final four minutes to secure the victory.

“Every guy on the team played hard and even through the loss we played with more passion that I have seen in a long time.” said Suhovy.

The Sunbirds travel to Santa Clara for the Santa Clara Tournament this weekend.
