Hot-Shooting Mustangs Trample Sunbirds

Box Score

#24 Fresno Pacific was held to a season-low 54 points on Tuesday night and a hot-shooting Master's team took advantage, defeating the Sunbirds 73-54 in Santa Clarita.

The Sunbirds (10-4, 1-2 GSAC) were limited to under 33 percent shooting from the field, while the Mustangs (11-3, 3-0 GSAC) would light up the scoreboard in their home gym, shooting 55 percent from the field and making 12-of-23 from three-point range (52%).

"This was a 'welcome to the GSAC' wakeup call," said Sunbird coach Chris Wright. "They were the better team tonight. They wanted it more than we did and we didn't respond. It's nothing to panic over, we just need to get better. We'll get back and start preparing for our next home game."

FPU trailed by two at halftime, but would come out cold in the second half shooting 28.6 percent compared to 63 percent for the Mustangs. Donte Nicholas' three-pointer would tie the game at 32 with 17:26 remaining but the Mustangs would counter with a 14-4 run.

Nicholas would find Antonio Credit for a fastbreak dunk with 11 minutes to play to bring the lead back down to six, but another 14-4 run by the Mustangs would open up a 16-point lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The Sunbirds turned the ball over 21 times in the loss, leading to 28 Mustang points. Nicholas led FPU with 15 points, the only scorer in double figures as Kenny Bradford and Eric Hipolito each added eight. Bradford and Credit were the team's leading rebounders with six apiece.

Sharpshooters Leif Karlberg and Anthony Cammon led the way for the Mustangs, scoring 19 and 18 points respectively and combining for nine three-pointers. Chris Patureau came off the bench to add 14 points and Devin Dyer finished with 13. Cammon added seven assists.

The 19-point loss was FPU's most lopsided of the season. The Sunbirds will look to get back on track as they return home this weekend to face Point Loma Nazarene at 4:30 pm. The Sea Lions (8-4, 1-2 GSAC) are coming off a one-point home win over San Diego Christian and have losses against Westmont and Vanguard in GSAC play this season.
