Fresno Pacific didn't quite have enough left in the tank on Saturday against NCAA Division III power Redlands, surrendering a 7-6 fourth quarter lead and falling 8-7 to Redlands. Earlier in the day the Sunbirds had played #4 Stanford, falling 16-0, and defending national champion #1 USC, which handed FPU a 26-4 loss.
Redlands, ranked #2 in NCAA Division III, defeated the Sunbirds by one goal last season. The Sunbirds have closed the gap each year the two teams have played, so were hoping this would be the year they'd knock off the Bulldogs.
Unfortunately, that didn't materialize as Redlands would score the last two goals of the game to send the Sunbirds home empty handed.
Mateja Maksimovic had given FPU a 7-6 lead 6:21 remaining in the game but Redlands would tie it up two minutes later, before scoring the winning goal on a power play with 3:40 left.
The Sunbirds threw everything they had at the goal in the last three minutes, but the Redlands defense held strong for the win.
Nick Fadden led the Sunbirds with four goals.
Earlier in the day, though the Sunbirds couldn't get much going against #4 Stanford, they did manage to score four times off the defending NCAA champs and preseason #1 team.
Glenn Lyon was responsible for two of the goals against the top-ranked Trojans.
FPU's schedule doesn't get a whole lot easier, but they do hope to have some crowd support in their next game. The Sunbirds open the home schedule this Friday against #13 UC Davis at 4 pm. The game will be played at Clovis High School.
