Sunbirds fight off Warriors, improve to 3-1

Box Score

Fresno Pacific defeated visiting William Jessup 80-65 on Tuesday night behind a 16-point, 11-assist performance by Jenay Herring. Kayla Clement scored 15 points on five three-pointers and Keri Stephanoff added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Sunbirds (3-1) jumped out to a big early lead, but the Warriors climbed back to within five at halftime before FPU shot 53 percent in the second half to pull away. A three-pointer by Clement put the team up 10-0 after the first five minutes and after Herring found Clement for another three the team was up 18-4 with 11 minutes left in the half.

The Warriors cut into the deficit however, chipping away at the lead until a Cassie Davidson buzzer-beater put WJU within five at halftime, 34-29. Though the Warriors would hang around for most of the second half, the Sunbirds never let them get any closer than five. Leading 67-60, FPU closed out the final four and a half minutes on a 13-5 run to end it.

Alyssa Wright led the Warriors with 19 points, leading all scorers. Davidson added 15 and Maria Viola finished with 11.

In addition to FPU's three double-digit scorers, the Sunbirds got strong performances from Breana Buczek, who in limited minutes scored seven points to go with seven rebounds, three blocks and three assists before fouling out. Stephanie Larson also had some quality minutes in the post, scoring eight points.

The Sunbirds will host Menlo on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
