LA MIRADA, Calif. - Fresno Pacific (25-13, 17-13 GSAC) and Biola (23-17, 15-15 GSAC) had an unusual and exciting game as they combined for 50 runs with a final score more resemblance to a football game with the Sunbirds winning 31-19. However, in the second game the Sunbirds lost with a more recognizable score of 7-5.
During game-one, the Sunbirds broke or tied nine team single-game records in batting average, at bats, runs scored, runs batted in, hits, singles, doubles, home runs, and most runs scored in a win. The Sunbirds hit 31-for-56 with 29 RBIs and 5 home runs.
Andrew Douglas led the Sunbirds with 9 RBIs in game-one with 10 RBIs for the day. Douglas had three home runs and hit 6-for-8 in the first game as well.
Case Rigby and Alec Mehrten both also had home runs in game-one while Blaine Taylor added another home run for the Sunbirds in their second-game loss. Rigby followed Douglas with 7 RBIs on the day with 6 in the first game and 1 RBI in the second game.
Matt Mazzoni came in as a relief pitcher in both games but earned the decision in both, earning the win in the first game and the loss in game-two. Mazzoni pitched the final 2.1 innings in game-one only allowing one hit and no runs, but allowed two hits and two runs against two batters in the eighth inning without an out.
Game-one was a crazy game where the Sunbirds led 18-7 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but gave up 12 runs in the seventh to fall behind 19-18. However, the Sunbirds responded with 11 runs of their own in the eighth inning.
The Sunbirds will return home for another doubleheader against Biola on Saturday, April 24. Game-one will begin at 12 noon.
