Lancers deal Sunbirds first home loss since 2002

Box Score

#3 Fresno Pacific struggled against #5 Cal Baptist on Saturday, falling in straight sets 26-24, 25-16 and 25-17.

It was the first GSAC loss for the Sunbirds (26-2, 17-1) and snapped both a 122 home-match win streak and a streak of 69 straight wins against GSAC teams. FPU came in with a chance to clinch the GSAC title outright, but will have to wait and pick up a win in one of the last two conference matches.

"We were beat in every phase of the match," said head coach Dennis Janzen. "Some of that had to do with Cal Baptist, but some of it had to do with us. Our mental preparation and effort was simply not at the level and standard of Sunbird volleyball. We are a team with enormous potential and I am confident that we will still reach that potential.”

The Sunbirds hit just .178 as a team and below .100 in the final two sets. Martina Gregusova had 13 kills and Keke Wang added 11, but the Sunbirds had trouble containing CBU's Ingrid Carmona who finished with 20 kills on .421 hitting.

FPU fell behind 7-1 in the first set, before Wang began to get things going offensively. The team would come back from a 21-15 deficit to tie the set at 23, fueled by back-to-back kills from Wang.

Carmona responded with a kill for CBU, but Wang came right back with one of her own for the Sunbirds. The Lancers would get consecutive kills from Linjun Ji though to end the set.

From that point it would all go downhill for FPU as they were out-hit .433 to .133 in set two and never seemed to get into a rhythm. The Sunbirds would call multiple timeouts in sets two and three to try and regroup, but hit just .033 as a team in the third set, the lowest they have hit all season.

CBU improved to 28-4, 15-3 GSAC with the win and earned a split of the season series with the Sunbirds.

The Sunbirds' last home loss was November 23, 2002 against Point Loma Nazarene. The last regular season home loss was October 14, 2000 to then Christian Heritage.
