FPU goes 1-3 at Concordia Invite

Sunday
The Sunbirds lost two games on Sunday during the last day of the Concordia Invite, falling 10-5 to Air Force and 11-9 to Occidental.

Evan Baird had six total goals on the day, followed by Glenn Lyon and Ray Eggert, each with two. Riley Warner had 22 saves.

FPU played solid defense against Air Force, shutting down their counterattack. The Sunbirds struggled offensively, though. After finishing the first quarter down 3-2, Fresno Pacific let Air Force gain control of the game. They went up 7-3 at half, and later completed the victory 10-5.

The Sunbirds went into halftime ahead 5-4 against Occidental, but let the Tigers back into the game, eventually losing 11-9. Impatience and missed opportunities from Fresno Pacific allowed Occidental to capitalize on several counterattacks as they secured the win.

"We've shown great growth over the course of the season," said coach Bryan Suhovy when asked about the tournament as a whole. "We continue to improve each weekend."

FPU (7-16) takes on Cal Baptist in Fresno this Thursday at 7:30 pm.

Saturday

Fresno Pacific beat Vanguard 13-8 and lost to Concordia 13-6 on Saturday at the Concordia Invitational in Irvine.

Glenn Lyon had eight goals on the day, followed by Trevor Kolb with three. Riley Warner posted 25 saves.

Against Vanguard, the Sunbirds scored seven goals in the first half and eight in the second, while holding the Lions to just three goals until the fourth quarter. Lyon's five goals guided FPU to a solid 13-8 win.

A tough effort from Fresno Pacific wasn't enough against hosting Concordia. The Eagles controlled the game, handing the Sunbirds a 13-6 loss.

Coach Bryan Suhovy was happy with his team's performance. “It was the best we've played against Concordia,” he said. “We came out strong and never looked back.  It was a good day for us.”
