AZUSA, Calif. – Fresno Pacific (17-0, 7-0 GSAC) had another top-ten opponent in Azusa Pacific (14-5, 5-2 GSAC), and came out on top again. The Sunbirds only dropped the second set in their 3-1 victory over Azusa, winning 25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20.
Martina Gregusova showed why she won NAIA player of the week last week as she continued her outstanding play for the Sunbirds with 23 kills on 47 attempts and five errors. Gregusova had six kills in the final set including the game winning point to end a 6-2 rally from Azusa.
Erika Adachi and
Emily Carroll led the Sunbirds in assists with 25 and 27 apiece, respectively.
Defensively, the Sunbirds came up big with 13 blocks over Azusa's eight.
Keke Wang and
Lauren Albertson each had seven blocks for the Sunbirds.
Mariah Mandelbaum led the Sunbirds with 25 digs.
Coach Dennis Janzen said, “It's always great to get a win over a tough competitor on the road. The girls came up big when it really counted.”
The Sunbirds get their victory following their 28th straight poll at the No. 1 slot.
The Sunbirds will continue their gauntlet of top-ten teams as they return home to take on No. 3 Cal Baptist on Saturday, October 2. Cal Baptist was upset last week against Vanguard, but have rebounded since, defeating Biola and Master's College. The first serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
