Sunbirds split at Lancer Invitational

Water polo finish 2-2; wins over Chapman and La Verne

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Fresno Pacific (8-4) came out of the Lancer Invitational much improved from last season going 2-2 for the tournament.  Last year the Sunbirds fell 0-4 at the tournament, but this year pulled off wins over Chapman and La Verne, 11-9 and 10-6, respectively.  The Sunbirds also lost 8-10 against Pomona-Pitzer and 8-17 to Concordia.

 

Nick Fadden led the Sunbirds with 10 goals on the weekend while Glenn Lyon followed with eight goals of his own.  Fadden's tournament high came against Chapman when he put up five goals.  Lyon had four in the Sunbirds' loss to Concordia.

 

Riley Warner protected the cage well throughout the weekend with 36 saves for the tournament.  Warner had 12 saves to help defeat Chapman 11-9.

 

Coach Brian Suhovy commented, “I was really pleased with how we played all weekend.  The guys played tough in every game.”

 

Next weekend the Sunbirds continue their fourth weekend in a row with tournament play in Claremont.  The Sunbirds are scheduled to take on Occidental, Redlands, Santa Clara and Claremont.  Fresno Pacific begins the weekend against Occidental at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 2.
