COSTA MESA, Calif. – No 1 Fresno Pacific (14-0, 4-0 GSAC) wasted little time posting another win this season as they swept Vanguard (8-5, 2-2 GSAC). In just under an hour, the Sunbirds showed why they're still number one in the country winning 25-13, 25-15 and 25-18.
All cylinders were firing for the Sunbirds as they outhit Vanguard 0.430 to 0.032 only giving up six errors in the entire match. Fresno Pacific was nearly perfect in the second set hitting 16 for 23 with no errors for a 0.696 hitting percentage. The Sunbirds also came up with 13 blocks to one block for Vanguard.
Keke Wang led the Sunbirds with 11 kills, followed by
Michelle Johnson who hit eight kills on 11 attempts and no errors for an amazing 0.727 hitting percentage.
Fresno Pacific had some great scoring runs. The Sunbirds opened behind 0-2 in the first set, but went on a 10-0 run to take control of the set. Again in the third set, Vanguard pulled within one 13-12 when the Sunbirds went on an 8-1 to lead 20-13, which led to the Sunbirds victory.
Coach Dennis Janzen commented, “It was a great match for us, and another balanced performance for the girls. [With only six errors] it was a very clean match.”
Defensively,
Mariah Mandelbaum led with 13 digs while
Lisa Shilling contributed to six of the Sunbirds 13 blocks.
Lauren Albertson and Johnson both had five blocks apiece in the Sunbirds win.
The Sunbirds will return home on Tuesday, September 22 to take on Hope International. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
