ATHERTON, CA. - The Sunbird women's basketball team (3-8) made it two in a row by defeating William Jessup (4-10) Tuesday evening 65-60 in their first game of the Menlo College Peninsula Classic.
FPU's 16-point lead with just over seven minutes left to play was just enough to hold off a late surge by the Warriors and secure the win for the Sunbirds.
Junior forward
Jessica Torrecillas had another solid performance, netting a game-high 23 points and grabbing 6 rebounds while going 8-11 from the field and 7-8 from the line.
Sophomore guard
Keri Stephanoff also chipped in with 14 points, and junior guard
Michele Rebozzi put up 11 for FPU.
The Sunbirds shot 44% from the field and were 17 of 24 from the line on the way to the win.
"We're starting to play longer stretches of good basketball," acknowleged FPU assistant coach
Tim Beauregard, "and our goal is to put together 40 minutes of that, but we will take what we can get right now."
Fresno Pacific will take on Menlo Wednesday evening in the final game of the Classic. Tip-off is at 6 pm.
