THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Fresno Pacific returned for day two of the Cal Lutheran Fall Tournament with two close games. Fresno Pacific (4-1) defeated Whittier (1-4) this morning in overtime 11-9, but the Sunbirds (4-2) turned around and lost another tight one 8-9 against Occidental (1-5).
On the weekend, Caleb Goings recorded 12 saves while Riley Warner stopped 10.
In the first game, Whittier led the whole way, going into the fourth quarter with a 7-5 lead, but the Sunbirds managed to score four times in the fourth to send the game into overtime. The final goal came after the Sunbirds drew an ejection and immediately called a timeout. Playing a man up, Tim Kahn scored the tying goal, his second of the game, with 0:36 seconds left on the clock. In overtime, Luke MacAlpine scored two of his four goals to take the Sunbirds to victory.
Gabe Calderon added three goals of his own, and Kristzian Kovacs put in the remaining two goals for the game.
When the Sunbirds returned to the pool, against Occidental, they trailed 4-5, but scored twice while keeping Occidental scoreless to lead at the half. The game would remain close the rest of the game, but once Occidental took a 7-6 lead at the end of the third it remained a one point game through the finish.
Calderon led the Sunbirds with three more goals, making it eight goals for the tournament, while Kahn scored two and Milorad Pavlovic, MacAlpine and Kovacs all contributed a goal apiece.
The Sunbirds head down to Riverside next weekend for another tournament, opening with Concordia and Chapman on Friday at Chapman.
