#1 Sunbirds over #2 Concordia

Another number two, another sweep

FRESNO, Calif. – It doesn't matter who is number two, the Sunbirds are going to be up for the challenge.  #2 Concordia (18-3, 8-3 GSAC) came in to Fresno with their newly number two ranking just to get swept by #1 Fresno Pacific (18-0, 10-0 GSAC), 25-17, 25-15, and 25-16.

 

Coach Dennis Janzen commented, “We came out ready to play today.”  The Sunbirds were ready; they never trailed Concordia, and opened the first two sets with 10-1 and 10-2 leads.  The third set the Sunbirds came out with a 6-0 lead, and despite Concordia closing within three points, the Sunbirds finished the match strong with a 9-2 run.

 

Fresno Pacific hit 45 kills on 94 attempts with only 11 errors, hitting 0.362, and holding Concordia to only 0.153 hitting percentage.

 

Fabiana Leomil had 11 kills, leading the Sunbirds in kills and hitting percentage, hitting 0.500 on 22 attempts and no errors. #Tiffany Marinos# led the way with 10 digs, while Shu Liu had another amazing 40 assists of the Sunbirds total 44 assists.

 

Even though it may look like just another sweep, coach Janzen concluded, “Concordia is an outstanding team whom we have a tremendous amount of respect for. It took a total team effort to get a win today and this exactly what we got.  We as a coaching staff are very proud of the effort and execution today.”

 

The Sunbirds will take on another nationally ranked team on Tuesday, October 14.  #14 Azusa Pacific (16-6, 6-4 GSAC) will roll into Fresno; match begins at 7:00 p.m.
