LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The Fresno Pacific men's soccer team brought the heat to the season opener against No. 11 Cal State Los Angeles. Strong defensive efforts from the Sunbirds gave the team a fighting chance, yet in the end, Fresno Pacific fell 2-0.
The Blue and Orange faced a challenging first half against Cal State LA, trailing 1-0 at halftime. Senior midfielder
Phillip Rico started the offensive charge against the Golden Eagles, blasting a deep shot towards the cage in the first five minutes. The Sunbirds met resistance for the remainder of the match.
In the 27th minute, the Golden Eagles turned the tide by capturing the first goal. From then on, it was a hard-fought battle to maintain possession. Fresno Pacific's returning leading scorer
Lucas Ribeiro was a force to reckon with on the field. The determined senior forward tallied two shots on goal alongside returning midfielders
Brandon Lopez and
Phillip Rico's second attempt for a goal. The Golden Eagles responded in kind and swarmed the opposite side of the pitch, where the Sunbirds' defensive line was waiting.
Fresno Pacific's goalkeeper,
Elmer Carballo, made ten crucial saves, fending off the persistent efforts of the Golden Eagles. Carballo tallied five saves in each half, which contributed to the low-scoring match against the nationally-ranked team.
With the clock winding down, FPU struggled to find the net despite multiple attempts on goal, with
Brandon Lopez's bottom-left effort saved by CSULA's goalkeeper, and several other shots going wide. Cal State LA extended their lead early in the second half with a 55th-minute goal by Erick Alamo, sealing a 2-0 victory over the 'Birds in the end.
"It was a hard-fought match," said head coach
Cameron Shahrokhi. "Cal State LA is a national powerhouse and our guys competed well with them. It is a game of moments, and unfortunately, the ball didn't fall our way tonight. We will grow from this match and bounce back."
Fresno Pacific had several student-athletes make their debut as Sunbirds in the season opener, including transfers
Zion Vaughn and
Tariq Alabi, and freshman
Brayden Garcia. It may have been a tough loss for the Blue and Orange, but it is only the first great indicator of what is yet to come.
NEXT UP: The FPU men's soccer team kicks off its home opener against Cal State East Bay on Saturday, September 13th. The action starts at 7 pm at Ramirez Field in Fresno, California.
