Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

'Birds Blaze Past Visiting Beavers

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific men's water polo team returned to the Sunnyside Aquatics Center for an afternoon match against American River College, ultimately, defeating the team 16-9 in the exhibition.

One minute into the first period, sophomore utility Chris Sandino was the first Sunbird to score, but the Beavers were quick to tie it back up 1-1. Junior goalkeeper Chase Hammes saved back-to-back shots from American River, ensuring the Beavers wouldn't take the lead. Forrest Gray made a dominating goal, assisted by Sandino, at the 2:14 mark to bump FPU into the lead, then captured another at the start of the second period.

In the second period, a quick pass from Gray to Christian Clark bumped the Sunbirds into a major lead over the Beavers. Clark went on to make a crucial steal, which lead to Sandino's penalty goal to make the score 5-3. Sandino blazed ahead for the Blue and Orange netting another goal from a well-timed assist from Samuel Ramos.

Despite the Beavers' attempt, Hammes stopped a daring shot from the right corner with thirty seconds remaining. In the cage, Hammes tallied 16 saves overall for the day. With barely five seconds left, Jordan Lambert took advantage of a late turnover and scored up close and personal, making it 7-3 going into the half.

The Blue and Orange were relentless after halftime. At the start of the third, Joey Brocar scored the eighth goal for FPU thanks to an assist from Ramos, who had four assists overall. Luke Young, Tristin Fox, and Gray were a force to reckon with, applying pressure against the Beavers until the last second.

As the game progressed, American River found their rhythm, netting a few goals to close the gap, but the 'Birds claimed victory in the exhibition.
