Game Recap: Men's Water Polo |

Sunbirds Tally Six in Final Stretch Against Golden Eagles

FRESNO, Calif. – Opening their second home match of the weekend, the Fresno Pacific men's water polo team faced adversity against Concordia University Irvine. The Sunbirds were overrun at the start, but Forrest Gray and Tristin Fox led the rallying cry in the fourth period, ending it all 10-16.

At the start, Concordia didn't hesitate and charged ahead, netting three goals in the first three minutes of the match. Key shots by Gray and Jake Canales challenged the Golden Eagles defense, but CUI trailed ahead with two more goals, bumping them to a 5-point lead.

In the second period, Christian Clark was the first Sunbird to get on the board, breaking past the Golden Eagles defense at the seven-minute mark to make it 1-5. The assist came from teammate Chris Sandino who followed the goal with a couple of close shots of his own. Concordia contributed two more goals, keeping the Sunbirds at a safe distance. Taking advantage of the man-down situation, Luke Young found the back of the net, assisted by Joey Brocar, to boost FPU back into the game 2-8.

Concordia opened the third period with their ninth goal, but center attacker Clark responded quickly with a shot off the post to keep the Golden Eagles alert. Soon after, Gray broke ahead of CUI's defense and captured two back-to-back goals, stopping at nothing to get the Sunbirds back into the game. By the end of the third, the Golden Eagles secured a ten-point lead over the Sunbirds.

In the final period, Fresno Pacific had a late surge as multiple Sunbirds added points to the board. At the four-minute mark, Gray completed his hat trick, and the dynamic duo Sandino and Fox got in on the action, bringing the score to 8-15. After his incredible assist to Fox, Samuel Ramos sent one into the back of the net to boost FPU to their ninth goal. With only seven seconds on the clock, Gray pushed ahead on the powerplay, thanks to assist from Young, to end the match 10-16.

NEXT UP: The Sunbirds take on Bucknell University at 4 pm on Friday, October 24 at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
