RIVERSIDE, Calif.- It was rough opening to the 2025 season for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds as they fell 18-2 to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on day one of the Lancer Joust.
The 'Birds faced a tough opening period, struggling to keep pace with Pomona-Pitzer's offense. The Sagehens struck early and often, capitalizing on turnovers and defensive lapses. Despite strong efforts from
Emma Cook and
Tatum Benson, the Sunbirds failed to register a shot on goal. Pomona-Pitzer dominated possession and converted on a penalty shot to end the quarter with a 4-0 lead.
Fresno Pacific's defense faced immense pressure in the second period as Pomona-Pitzer continued to exploit exclusions and turnovers. The Sunbirds' lack of offensive rhythm and inability to win key possessions limited their chances to break through the Sagehens' defense. Despite a standout effort by goalkeeper
Katie Whittingham, who recorded five saves by halftime, Fresno Pacific trailed 9-0.
The 'Birds showed some fight in the third period, managing to break their scoring drought. After allowing three more goals to Pomona-Pitzer,
Emma Cook scored the Sunbirds' first goal of the game, assisted by
Frances Benson, with just two seconds remaining in the period. This breakthrough showcased the team's resilience, even as they trailed 13-1.
The Sunbirds continued to battle in the final period, adding another goal to their tally.
Emma Cook found the back of the net again, this time off an assist from
Maggie Cook, giving Fresno Pacific a brief spark of momentum. However, Pomona-Pitzer's relentless attack added five more goals to their total, cementing their dominant 18-2 victory. Despite the loss, the Sunbirds displayed moments of solid teamwork and determination.
Fresno Pacific will regroup and be back in the pool early tomorrow morning as they face the Whittier College Poets at 9am.
