FRESNO, Calif.- A trio of Fresno Pacific Sunbirds have earned All-PacWest honors, announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference.
Mia Gilcrest was named to the First Team All-PacWest along with teammate
Cambria Waites, while
Makayla Smith took home Co-Freshman Player of the Year and Second-Team All-PacWest honors.
This season, Gilcrest ranked in the PacWest top ten in multiple categories including tenth in hitting percentage (.270), sixth in kills (348), and fourth in points (389.5). Along with her PacWest conference rankings, Gilcrest also won Player of the Week three times. A season and career high for Gilcrest came against Dominican where she recorded 27 kills and 16 digs.
One of the top ranked setters in the PacWest conference, Waites also topped the charts coming in third in assists (1,000) and sixth in service aces (41). Waites led the 'Birds in sets played (108), digs (276), and matches started (28). The junior setter recorded a career and season high 52 assists against Concordia University Irvine (9/21), along with an 1,000 assist season which ranks her eighth all-time.
Double the honors, Smith made a shinning debut to the PacWest conference. Smith finished the year eighth in the PacWest standings in kills per set (3.07) and was tenth in points (3.49). For the Sunbirds, Smith was second in kills (315), recording a season high 20 against Menlo (10/7).
The Sunbirds ended the season with a third place finish in the PacWest after being ranked ninth in the preseason poll with an overall record of 18-10 and a conference record of 13-7.
