IRVINE, Calif.- Early goals for the Golden Eagles proved to be the difference Saturday afternoon as the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds dropped their final regular season game to the Concordia University Irvine 14-7.
Fresno Pacific had a slow start, conceding the first goal to Concordia. Despite
Pietro Cattano finding the net for the Sunbirds three minutes later, Concordia dominated the period, scoring four goals overall, to extend the Golden Eagles lead to 4-1.
The Sunbirds improved defensively in the second period, holding Concordia scoreless.
Pietro Cattano scored his second goal of the game, assisted by
Eugenio Maldonado, narrowing the gap to 4-2. Despite the defensive effort, Fresno couldn't capitalize further, missing critical opportunities to level the score.
Concordia roared back in the third period with six goals.
Forrest Gray managed to score early, and Maldonado added another goal late in the quarter, but the Sunbirds struggled to contain the Golden Eagle's relentless attack. The third period ended with Concordia up 10-4.
In the final period, Fresno Pacific fought hard but couldn't overcome Concordia's early lead. Christiano Sandino scored early, and late goals by
Blake Johnson and
Luke Young added a spark, but it wasn't enough. The Golden Eagles added to their tally to seal a 14-7 victory.
The Sunbirds will head back to Irvine next weekend to kick off their post season as they compete in the WWPA Tournament.
