HONOLULU, Hawaii - The second stop on FPU Women's Soccer's Hawaii swing didn't fall the Sunbirds' way, as they fell to Chaminade 1-0 Wednesday. The loss ends their three-game unbeaten run.
The first half was fairly balanced and neither team was able to exert any sort of dominance. Chaminade's Haley Mo'okini had two shots on goal early, both of which were saved by Sunbirds' goalkeeper
Monique Nevarez. Fouls were frequent, with the Silverswords committing multiple fouls in quick succession, including two by Brynn Shimabukuro within less than two minutes. The Sunbirds'
Mackenzie Madron also fouled twice during the half, contributing to a total of 11 fouls between both teams. Offsides were called three times against the 'Swords and once against the Sunbirds, indicating frequent attempts to push the offensive line.
The second half began with Chaminade applying pressure early, and in the 50th minute were able to capitalize on a freaky play and some poor positioning. The Silverswords' Clara Slate-Liu attempted a long range chip attempt on Nevarez, and the FPU shot-blocker was able to barely deny the attempt. She quickly backtracked and leaped to keep the ball out of the net, but her only choice was to push it back into play to avoid her body's momentum from bringing the ball with her into the net. Unfortunately, Chaminade's Gracie Knowd was there to sweep the ball up and fire into the net at point blank range after going into the box unmarked behind the defense.
Cautions crept up on the Sunbirds, committing multiple fouls and receiving three yellow cards in the second half, including two in quick succession. Both teams had multiple shot attempts, with Fresno Pacific's
Sophie Rosales and
Karyssa Lopez having shots saved or missed, while Chaminade's Slate-Liu and Kenna Kiefer also saw their efforts saved or go off target. Ultimately the game would end in frustrating fashion as the Lady 'Birds would be unable to level the score and leave Honolulu with the result they hoped for.
"The group fought hard all the way to the final whistle," said FPU Associate Head Coach
Roberto Hernandez. "Ultimately one mistake cost us the result, but I'm proud of the fight from the group and know we will bounce back against Hilo."
The Sunbirds' final stop in Hawaii before returning home to the mainland is Saturday against PacWest leaders Hawaii-Hilo. The Vulcans are coming off their first loss of the season in a defeat to Westmont. Kickoff is set for 3:30pm PT and will stream live on the PacWest Network.
