Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lucas Strike Sends Surging Sunbirds Past Sharks

HONOLULU, Hawaii - A complete team performance by the entire FPU men's soccer squad fueled a comprehensive 3-0 road win over Hawaii Pacific Monday night.  A gorgeous first half strike from Lucas Ribeiro gave the Sunbirds the lead, and second half contributions from Ayden Salvador and Chris Macias ensured the visiting Sunbirds that their Hawaii road trip would kick off with a W.  They've now won three straight PacWest Conference games and are firmly back in the mix for the postseason.

"A fantastic team performance from our men," said FPU Associate Head Coach Cameron Shahrokhi.  "Numerous players stepped up and had top performances."

The win marks FPU's first-ever at Hawaii Pacific.  In their six prior trips to face the Sharks in Honolulu, the Sunbirds were 0-4-2 before Monday's win.

Ribeiro, the PacWest's leading scorer, opened up the scoring just before half.  He received a long, well-weighted pass from Bryan Lopez and was one on one with his defender near the corner of the box.  "When I received the ball from Bryan the first thing that came to my mind was that this kind of play is perfect for me since I love to take on defenders," Ribeiro said after the match.  Calm and collected, he shook his defender and sent a left-footed laser past the HPU keeper and into the net.

The second half saw Salvador double the lead on a long, low effort assisted by Giovanni Segovia.  It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman from Madera.  Macias closed out the scoring with a late penalty conversion to slam the door on the hosts and confirm the victory for the visiting Sunbirds.

Goalkeeper Dewa Sanjaya made his first conference start of the season, and made three saves to go along with a clean sheet against the Sharks.  "Dewa was big time for us in goal," added Shahrokhi.

The win moves the Sunbirds into sixth place in the conference standings with four games remaining in the regular season.

"We are finding our form and playing our best soccer at the right time."

The Hawaii road trip continues for the Sunbirds with a short trip to Chaminade on Wednesday.  Kick off is set for 1pm PT and will stream live on the PacWest Network.
