LA MIRADA, Calif.- The promising start and stellar pitching of the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (7-10 overall, 1-1 PacWest) forged a split on the road against the Biola Eagles (6-14 overall, 1-6 PacWest) surging to a 8-3 win before falling 5-4 Thursday at the Eagles Diamond.
Garrett Cooper twirled seven scoreless innings and Fresno Pacific supported him with a 6-0 lead after six innings en route to a win in its conference opener Thursday.
Cooper allowed just three base runners over his seven innings of work and had a one-hitter when he was lifted at the start of the 8
th.
At that point, FPU's offense had provided plenty of cushion as
Peyton McNair's sacrifice fly in the 2
nd opened the scoring.
Miguel Ortiz cranked a home run to double the lead in the fourth, but the big salvo from the Sunbirds came in the sixth.
Tommy Rover's RBI single plated
Andrew Valdez to extend the lead before
Chris Clement's RBI single brought Rover home for the second time in the game. Clement scored on
Jordan Smith's RBI single. McNair scored later in the frame on a wild pitch.
Biola cut the six run lead in half with a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the eighth against the bullpen but the Sunbirds loaded the bases in the ninth and forced home a pair of runs to put the game out of reach.
The 'Birds built an early lead in game two as Ortiz's flared a single into right field with two outs in the first to plate Rover.
FPU doubled the lead in the 2
nd on
Donte Valdez' solo homer over the left field fenced.
Rover extended the lead to three with an RBI knock into center that plated
Andrew Valdez in the third.
Jared Aguilar was stout on the mound for four solid innings, navigating around a handful of walks, before defensive mistakes opened the door for Biola to tie the game with a three-run fifth.
Gino Helmuth eleviated the pressure in that fifth inning, preventing Biola from gaining the lead by stranding two runners.
The Sunbirds responded with Ortiz scoring on
Cole Yoshida's RBI double down the right field line in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
But Biola hit a pair of homers in the bottom of the 7
th to walk-off on FPU and split the double-header.
The series will conclude, after a day off, with a double-header on Saturday. Game one begins at 11 a.m.
