FRESNO, Calif.-For the fourth consecutive game, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (8-2 overall) marched away in the second half, this time securing a 62-46 win over the Seattle Pacific Falcons (4-7 overall) Saturday afternoon in the Special Events Center.
Maesyn Rix posted her fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds while simultaneously neutralizing a duo on the other team that had a pair of double-doubles in their last game.
The game skewed toward the defensive end throughout the first quarter with neither team shooting better than 30%.
But Fresno Pacific found its rhythm as
Anisa Rillo knocked down a couple of threes as the 'Birds clung to a four point lead at halftime.
It was the third quarter that FPU opened things up with
Felicia Dourva spurring the offense with a bulk of her four assists. The 'Birds closed the third quarter by outscoring SPU 23-13.
That was enough to stave off the Falcons best scoring quarter of the game in the fourth, and the Sunbirds still outscored their guests in the period.
Eight different players made a field goal for Fresno Pacific as it extended its win streak to four straight games.
But it was the 'Birds advantage on the inside, keyed by Rix and
Jayla Green's 8 rebounds, that seemed to swing the game.
The Sunbirds nearly doubled up SPU in points in the paint including a 14-2 mismatch in that key third quarter.
Rix, Green, and Rillo also combined to hold the starting post players for Seattle Pacific to just 4 of 17 from the field and outrebounded the group 26-9.
While Rix led FPU in scoring for the third time this season, Dourva added 13 points in her fourth consecutive game in double-figures—and sixth double-digit point total of the season.
Rillo's 11 points equal to her first double-digit scoring game of the season.
Fresno Pacific will welcome UC Merced back to the Special Event Center, for the second meeting in Fresno between the teams this season, Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
