FRESNO, Calif.-A pair of runs that essentially bookended the game turned into a 70-52 loss for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-8 overall) to the Sonoma State Seawolves (6-4 overall) Saturday evening in the Special Events Center.
Sonoma State forced 19 turnovers, including 16 steals, that led to 22 points and equated to the difference in the game.
After trading initial buckets, the guests went on a 15-0 run to take a 17-2 lead.
But
Avery Lewis sparked the Sunbirds offense with 7 points off the bench in Fresno Pacific's 10-0 run.
The rest of the first half remained within a couple of possessions as the Sunbirds shot 52% from the field.
But a half court heave at the buzzer turned a would-be two possession game at the half into an eight point difference in favor of Sonoma State.
Despite some early offense from the Sunbirds, Sonoma State would only pull away in the second half, leading by as much as 23 at a point.
Lewis finished with a game-high 16 points while
Harrison Pennisi and
Isaac Peralta also finished in double-figures for the Sunbirds.
Fresno Pacific has one more home game before the break, hosting Cal State Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
