CARSON, Calif.-A slew of early turnovers piled up into a 76-49 loss for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (0-4 overall) to the Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-1 overall) Toros Saturday at the Torodome.
The Sunbirds held an early lead behind second year players scoring and hustling.
Sophomore
Isaac Peralta had five points in the early going, including knocking down a three from the right wing.
Redshirt-freshman
Harrison Pennisi also contributed to a 9-5 lead with a pair of blocks, and offensive rebound and a couple of baskets.
But after the first media timeout, Dominguez Hills went on a 9-0 run which included 7 points off turnovers.
Avery Lewis returned to the court after missing the last two games and stopped the run with a driving layup to the left side of the cup.
Six early turnovers turned into a 16-11 deficit for FPU nearly midway through the first half.
Dominguez Hills extended its advantage to 24-12 before FPU scored six of the next nine points in the game but still trailed 27-18 four minutes to go before half.
The Toros turned the lead into a 37-22 advantage at the half.
FPU shot a higher percentage than its opponents in the first 20 minutes, hitting on eight of twenty field goals for a 40% half.
But 14 first half turnovers and no points off the five turnovers created led to an 11 point swing and provided most of the Toros first half fuel.
Harrison Pennisi was a perfect 4-4 from the field to lead the Fresno Pacific offense in the half.
The Sunbirds offense was not quite as efficient to start the second half but they did improve from deep.
After making just one total three-pointer in the first half, the Sunbirds saw
Kyle Monk, Pennisi,
Ryas Vang, and
Jonah Geron all hit from beyond the arc.
"Just a really ugly offensive performance," Fresno Pacific head coach
C.J. Haydock said. "Dominguez came out and set a really physical tempo from the start, and our response to that was lacking."
Dominguez Hills shot 50% in the second half and finished off the 76-49 scoreline.
"I thought when we got the game in the half court, we had some really solid stretches defensively," Haydock added. "And I thought
Harrison Pennisi's energy and offensive presence sparked us a little bit."
Pennisi led the way with 12 total points for FPU.
"I don't think anyone in our locker room believes we are performing to our potential on offense," Haydock concluded. "And I remain confident we are going to get a little better and a little tougher until it breaks through on that side of the ball."
Fresno Pacific has the week off from games before returning to action after Thanksgiving, hosting UC Merced Saturday at 5:30pm in the Special Events Center.
