Soaring Sunbirds Send Out Seniors with Sweep of DUC

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.-For one more night, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds played their greatest hits behind a trio of super seniors, sweeping the Dominican Penguins 25-21, 25-22 and 25-13 Friday night at the Conlan Center.

FPU sent Corinne Acosta, Makena Ogas, and Catie Speas out on the highest of notes while displaying a little bit of everything that well represents their time in Southeast Fresno.

While portions, especially early in sets looked bleak early, the Sunbirds' balance helped make it a special, and clean, sweep of their conference foes to conclude the regular season.

After Dominican scored the first four points on the match on their senior night, the Sunbirds formulated their response scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead.

The 'Birds scored six of eight points to take a 17-9 lead later in the set before Dominican came charging back.

Dominican pulled within three at 17-14 and eventually tied it at 20-20.

Makena Ogas made her mark with an emphatic kill to put FPU back in front and the 'Birds held a 23-21 advantage after a bad set by DUC.

Mia Gilcrest's service run helped FPU close out the set after a timeout with an ace closing out the set 25-21.

The Sunbirds again roared in front in an early part of set two, taking a 7-3 lead before Dominican drew close.

Claire Corippo and Gilcrest helped FPU separate to a 10-5 lead before Dominican scored three consecutive points.

The Penguins seized the lead at 12-11 before a service error gave sideout to FPU.

The 'Birds scored the next five points after that as well to take a 17-12 lead, punctuated by a combo block from Geneva Elliott and Ogas.

Dominican cut the difference by scoring five of the next six to pull within one at 18-17.

After an FPU timeout, Dominican evened the set again, tying things up at 18-18.

But Gilcrest led the FPU response with her 10th kill of the match while extending FPU's lead 21-18.

After a Dominican timeout, Catie Speas continued her service run with an ace in stretching the lead.

The Sunbirds overcame eight errors in the set after Corippo generated set point and then closed it out for a two set lead, 25-22.

The third set was 5-5 before Mia Gilcrest's service runs saw kills from Madison Girnius and Corinne Acosta.

Corippo delivered back-to-back kills before another kill from Acosta made it 10-5 and forced a Dominican timeout.

From there, the 'Birds were all business from there, finishing the match with 15 of next 23 points and posting a monstrous .500 attack percentage in a 25-13 romp in the third set.

The 'Birds matched their set one total of 17 kills to finish with 46 kills on the evening.

Gilcrest led the effort with 11 kills and three service aces as well as sparking a number of the big runs from the service line.

But it was the super seniors that left their final touches on the program.

Catie Speas, who notched her 1,000th career assist last season, finishes with 1,747 in four seasons as Sunbird.

Speas had fourteen of those on Friday night with one more ace, giving her 118 for her career and putting her 10th all-time in FPU history.

Makena Ogas' 10 kills gives her double-digit kills in five of her last six matches as a Sunbird.

Ogas crossed the 1,000 career kill threshold in September and she finishes with 1,201 in her career.

Her 289 kills this season led FPU and were just three shy of her career best set in 2019.

Acosta leaves as the most accomplished Sunbird in the Division II era.

Friday night she had 7 errorless kills while flying all over on defense for 16 digs, tossed in an ace and an assist.

She eclipsed 1,300 kills and had 1,598 digs as a Sunbird with 104 service aces.

A former conference player of the year and multiple time all-conference selection, she never missed a minute in 128 matches, playing 460 sets as a Sunbird.

Fresno Pacific ends the season on a three-game win streak and concludes the year 13-16 overall and 9-11 in PacWest play.
