Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Offense Leads To Sunbirds' First League Win

OAKLAND, Calif. – The FPU women's basketball team (5-11 overall, 1-9 PacWest) put on an offensive clinic on Saturday afternoon, taking out Holy Names (1-17 overall, 0-10 PacWest) 91-44 for its first conference win of the season.

"I thought we played with a good sense of urgency and determination from the beginning of the game," Fresno Pacific head coach Tim Beauregard said. "There were parts of the game where our attention to detail and fundamental approach led to some good stretches."

It was a tight matchup to start with the Hawks even leading by as many as three points with 4:30 left in the opening quarter, but the Sunbirds were able to take over, going on a 13-5 run to close out the quarter and take a 21-16 lead into the second period.

The second quarter is when things opened up for the Sunbirds, who outscored Holy Names by 10 points in those 10 minutes.

With the Sunbirds up three points, Bre Hurt was able to knock down three straight jumpers in a 6-2 FPU run to put the 'Birds up 32-25 with 6:23 left in the half.

The run continued thanks to a couple of made shots from Lydia Manu and Julie Ramirez, along with a plethora of free throws, giving FPU a 45-30 lead heading into the break.

The offense continued to roll in the second half, but it was also the defense which shined, as the Sunbirds only allowed the Hawks to score a combined 14 points in the final two quarters on 3-of-29 shooting from the field and 0-for-9 from behind the arc.

After some back-and-forth action in the first six and a half minutes to start the second half, the Sunbirds were able to close it out on a 10-0 run thanks to a pair of layups from Rachel Berry and Ramirez, as well as a 3-pointer from Felicia Dourva as time expired, putting FPU up 60-38 with 10 minutes to go.

The run continued to start the final quarter, with the Sunbirds scoring 11 unanswered points to make it a 21-0 run over a 5 minute, 15 second period between the third and fourth quarters. The defense only gave up one made basket in the final quarter before closing the game on another 11-0 run to get the 47-point win.

"It's been a tough conference schedule with a lot of close games this season so far," Beauregard added. "We are hoping a little momentum from today can carry us into this next half of conference. We will stay together and chase a better version of ourselves this next week to keep the momentum."

Hurt led all scorers with a career-high 20 points along with eight rebounds.

Jenna Kurz wasn't far behind with 16 points of her own, and Dourva finished with 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc.

The Sunbirds will be back in action on Wednesday in a nonconference matchup with Lincoln University. Tip-off from the Special Events Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
