FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team started its third straight home PacWest series on Friday. They fell in games one and two of the four-game set to Biola, losing 13-5 in game one, followed by a 12-1 loss in game two.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a three-run home run in the third inning and a two-run shot in the top of the third. They were able to add two more in the top of the fourth inning to go up 7-0.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Matt McGrady was able to draw a one-out walk, and that was followed by a big home run from Andrue Lackey over the right-center field wall, making it 7-2.
- After a scoreless fifth frame, Matt Stearns entered in relief of Garrett Cooper on the mound and sat Biola down in order.
- The Sunbirds responded with two runs to make it 7-4. The inning started with a double by Andrew Valdez, who was driven in by McGrady on a single to center field.
- With two outs in the inning and runners on first and second, Garret Santos entered the game as a pinch hitter and drove in McGrady with a single to left-center field to make it 7-4.
- The Eagles were able to get both runs back in the top of the seventh, making it 9-4, and after holding FPU scoreless in the bottom half, they scored three more in the top of the eighth, pushing their lead to 12-4.
- After Biola scored one more in the top of the ninth, the Sunbirds were able to plate a run off of a Valdez single that brought inn Kyle Willman, who led the inning off with a double. But the Eagles were able to hold off the rally and get the game-one win.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Lackey drove in two runs on a 1-for-3 day with a home run and a walk.
- McGrady scored two runs and drove in one while also being walked twice.
- Cooper struck out six batters in five innings pitched.
- Stearns struck out four batters in two and two-thirds innings.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Game two of the day started out with a bang for the Sunbirds when Khalid Johnson robbed the Eagles of a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
- After two scoreless frames to start the game, Biola opened things up with three runs in the top of the third.
- The Eagles stayed hot at the plate, scoring in six straight innings, putting up 12 runs without letting the Sunbirds cross the plate until the bottom of the eighth inning.
- FPU scored after a throwing error by the Biola second baseman trying to turn a double play, allowing Jared Aguilar to cross the plate.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Cole Yoshida went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Aguilar and McGrady each drew two walks.
- Anthony Torres tossed three and one-third innings of relief, striking out four batters.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange will play two more on Saturday to close out the series. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
