FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific baseball team brought their bats to the first two games of a four-game set against Holy Names on Friday, as the Sunbirds swatted three home runs on their way to a 24-6 victory in game one and followed it up with a 15-9 win in game two.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Khalid Johnson greeted the Hawks with a leadoff home run to put the Sunbirds up 1-0 in the first inning.
- HNU answered by going up 2-1, before Andrew Valdez cleared the bases with a knock to right field, as Jared Aguilar scored, followed by Johnson and Cole Yoshida by way of some poor defense from the Hawks.
- Later in the third, Garret Santos drew a walk with the bases loaded, giving the Sunbirds a 5-2 lead in the third inning.
- FPU broke it up in the fourth, plating 11 runs, starting with a two run double from Aguilar.
- Andrue Lackey stepped to the dish and bashed a three-run homer in the fourth, scoring Matt McGrady and A. Valdez on Lackey's fifth home run of the year.
- The bases were loaded before A. Valdez cleared them with a double to left center.
- After the offensive outburst in the fourth, the Sunbirds enjoyed a 16-2 lead.
- The last big blow from the Sunbirds came off the bat of Shane Pursell, who smacked a three-run home run, scoring Mitchel Silvas and Isaiah Clark.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- Garrett Cooper got the start on the mound for the Sunbirds as he picked up the win after five innings of work.
- Syler Pillsbury, Mason Musgrave and Anthony Torres combined for four innings of relief work for the Birds.
- A. Valdez and Lackey led FPU with five runs batted in, while Johnson and Yoshida joined the two with three hits each.
- The Sunbirds bashed nine extra base hits in game one.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johnson led the bottom of the first off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a single form Aguilar. Johnson then scored off a wild pitch, giving the Sunbirds a 1-0 lead.
- The Hawks were able to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but a leadoff home run from A. Valdez to start the bottom of the third tied the game back up.
- The Sunbirds re-gained the lead after Yoshida crossed the plate on an error by HNU, and they made it 4-2 when Johnson crossed the plate for the second time after a groundout by Aguilar.
- Holy Named was able to get one back in the top of the fifth to make it 4-3, but an RBI double from Yoshida to score Santos and an RBI groundout from Johnson that brought in Ben Jungbluth pushed the FPU lead to 6-3.
- The Hawks wouldn't go away, scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game 6-6, but a bases-loaded groundout from Santos brought in McGrady, giving the Sunbirds a 7-6 lead.
- A long top of the seventh allowed the Hawks to push three across the plate to take a 9-7 lead, but FPU popped off for five runs in the bottom half to go up 12 -7.
- The first two runs crossed the plate when a bases-loaded double from McGrady scored Johnson and Aguilar to tie the game. A sacrifice fly by Lackey plated A. Valdez to give the Sunbirds the lead, and then a two-run shot to straightaway center from D. Valdez gave the Sunbirds some insurance heading into the eighth inning.
- Jaylen Rodriguez was able to sit Holy Names down in order in the eighth inning, which led to three more runs crossing the plate for the Sunbirds in the bottom half to make it 15-9.
- A double from A. Valdez brought in Aguilar and Johnson, and he was brought in on a double from Pursell to put the game out of reach.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- A. Valdez went 3-for-4 at the plate, bringing in three runs, scoring three runs, and adding a home run.
- McGrady added three hits of his own which brought in two runs.
- Johnson scored four runs on two hits and added an RBI. He was also walked two times.
- Michael Barker struck out eight batters in a start on the mound that lasted five and two-thirds innings.
- Rodriguez threw three and one-third innings with five strikeouts and earned the win in relief.
UP NEXT
The Blue and Orange will continue their homestand next weekend when they host Holy Names. Games one and two are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Friday, with games three and four coming on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
