IRVINE, Calif.-As they reach the most crucial part of their season and their schedule, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (14-7 overall, 13-3 PacWest) continue to reach new heights, delivering a sweep of the Concordia-Irvine Golden Eagles (16-9 overall, 13-5 PacWest) at the CU Arena Friday night.
The sweep gives FPU its fourth consecutive win, third consecutive sweep and snaps a 9 match losing streak against the Golden Eagles dating back to 2015. Its also the first win for the Sunbirds in Irvine during the NCAA era and the first road win against the Golden Eagles since 2010.
Things were even for much of the first set with FPU hold slight leads throughout the early going. After CUI pulled even at 12-12, FPU scored 13 of the final 18 points to cruise to a 25-15 win in the first set.
Corinne Acosta and
Makena Ogas kept CUI off-balance, with each registering three kills in the opening stanza.
The opening points of the second set mirrored the back and forth nature of the first, with FPU gaining momentum to grab six consecutive points behind
Cambria Waites while building a 12-7 lead.
Fresno Pacific delivered its most demonstrative set in the second as Waites continued to propel the offense with five of her first seven kills coming in the frame.
Madison Girnius also impacted the second set with three kills and a block.
FPU tallied a total of 17 kills in the frame, taking the second set 25-18.
The third set was even to 16 before FPU broke free behind Acosta's serve.
Ogas and Melis had kills to put FPU in front, before a pair of CUI errors made it 18-16.
Ogas and
Kaiessa Sounart went back-to-back to stretch the lead to 20-17. After CUI broke the run, another pair of CUI errors set FPU in front 22-18 and forced the Golden Eagles into a timeout.
FPU responded after the pause with three straight kills, one from Waites and two from Ogas to finish off the sweep.
Ogas finished with a team-high 10 kills while Waites and Acosta combined for 16 kills without an error.
Catie Speas led FPU with 19 assists and had a pair of dynamic service runs that propped the Sunbirds' lead, mixing in a pair of service aces.
The nine-match losing streak is the fourth four-year streak that FPU has snapped this season. The Sunbirds swept APU for the first time in eight years after a ten match losing streak. FPU snapped another 9 match losing streak against Biola in September.
The Sunbirds also derailed a 7-match match losing streak against Point Loma in October.
It's the first time in the NCAA and PacWest era that the Sunbirds have beaten each of the four Southern California schools in the same season.
Fresno Pacific will look to keep adding to their stellar season when it takes on PLNU Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in San Diego.
