TURLOCK, Calif.-Success at the free-throw line did not equate to the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (0-2 overall) first win of the season in a 65-57 loss to the Stanislaus State Warriors (1-1 overall) Saturday night at Fitzpatrick Arena.
Fresno Pacific pounded the ball inside as they struggled from deep and held onto an edge at the charity stripe but couldn't keep the pace down in the 2
nd half.
"We had a good first half with a lot of bright spots," Fresno Pacific head coach
C.J. Haydock reflected. "We just conceded too many second chances. In the second half, we let runs really disrupt us on both ends of the floor."
Fresno Pacific struck first and scored a pair of buckets, including
Michael Mensah's six consecutive three to start the season, taking a 5-0 lead.
Both offenses struggled against active physical defenses and the Sunbirds successes from three came in spots.
The Sunbirds held onto the lead as Stanislaus State created a few opportunities after FPU turnovers before
Kyle Monk's three buoyed the lead back to 20-15.
Fresno Pacific held onto a slim advantage at the half, 33-29.
In the second half, the Sunbirds fed
Darrin Person Jr., who created opportunities at the free-throw line.
But Stanislaus State forced some key turnovers and created a number of buckets on second chances to cement their lead.
Person Jr. finished with a game-high 22 points and 8 rebounds to earn all-tournament honors.
The 8 boards boosted FPU's edge on the glass but 19 turnovers created 20 points for Stanislaus State. FPU scored just 6 points off of turnovers.
"That's a good Stan State basketball team," Haydock said. "They have a lot of continuity and they really flexed our matchups. Turnovers are a big clean up for us and we've got to do a better job across the board."
Fresno Pacific will also get off the road for a couple of games beginning with its home opener Wednesday night against LaVerne at 6 p.m.
